Read what Idiomz had to say in this interview provided by The Spirit Radio (TSR).
TSR: Where are you from originally and what sort of things were you into growing up?
Idiomz: I grew up in a place called Oxon Hill, MD; which, is just outside of Washington, DC. I was pretty easy-going as a kid – whatever was fun, I pretty much did it.
TSR: How did you get started in the music business?
Idiomz: I'm not sure I can remember . . . my dad was in the business, so I guess he kind of rubbed off on me.
TSR: How long have you been doing what you are doing now?
Idiomz: I've been emceeing since I was about twelve. I'll be thirty-seven this year; so, I guess I've been at this for about twenty-five years now.
TSR: Who were some of your musical influences?
Idiomz: I've always considered myself to be eclectic; so my influences run the full spectrum. I tend to rate my influences by genre. In jazz: John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Charlie "Bird" Parker. In R&B/Soul: Roy Ayers, Minnie Ripperton and the artist formerly known as Prince. In Hip-Hop: Erik B. and Rakim and pretty much anything Native Tongue. I also like Metallica, Kenny Rodgers and Seal.
TSR: For those who may not have heard you before, how would you describe your music?
Idiomz: That's the question that any artist would hate to answer because you don't want to say that your music sounds like anybody else. However, what I will say is that my music is not typical. It is spiritually-based, yet rooted in reality. It's edgy, but it's also relevant.
TSR: What would you say that most of your songs are about?
Idiomz: My songs are about life as a Christian – but from this perspective: It isn't easy to be a Christian in the world we live in. I address everyday trials through my music: misogyny, drug use/abuse, sex, crime, racism – everyday stuff that we all experience in some way, shape or form.
TSR: What are your feelings toward Christians listening to secular music?
Idiomz: Not all secular music is bad music. Some of the greatest musicians and song writers could be considered secular. I believe Christians have to know their own spirit before they ingest secular music; however, I think it would be foolish to say that Christians should not listen to it at all.
TSR: How has God been working in your life lately? What things has He been teaching you?
Idiomz: You know, opening up and really listening to God is not only difficult; but, it is also humbling. If I am learning nothing else from God at this point, it is humility and thankfulness . . . .
TSR: What is the most important thing that you would like people to take away from your music or live shows?
Idiomz: First of all, I want people to realize that I am human; and as such, I am not perfect. And that it is okay not to be perfect. What's more important is that we recognize that we are God's children; and though we will continue to fall short, we should always strive to live in His Word.
TSR: What is your favorite bible verse?
Idiomz: Philippians 4:13: "I can do all things through Christ which strengthened me." This verse helped me get through my military career.
TSR: What things do you like to do in your spare time?
Idiomz: I am an avid model railroader. I love all things trains. I also like to coach youth football.
TSR: Who is your favorite Christian artist?
Idiomz: I don't have one particular favorite; however, artists that come to mind are Chris Bolton, Adrianne Archie, Corey Red & Precise, Sivion, Dana Divine – just to name a few.
